About the firmOne of the few Virginia firms devoted only to consumer protection
Krumbein Consumer Legal Services represents individuals — never the banks, bureaus, or collectors on the other side.
Krumbein Consumer Legal Services, Inc. was formed in 2003 and incorporated in 2007. Our mission has never changed: protect individual consumers against abusive and illegal consumer practices, and help them enforce the rights Congress gave them under the Fair Credit Reporting Act and the Fair Debt Collection Practices Act.
How the firm came to be
The Krumbein family has practiced consumer law in central Virginia for decades. Krumbein & Associates was formed in 1987 with a focus on consumer bankruptcy. Working there, Jason M. Krumbein saw a pattern: people who filed for bankruptcy to stop collection abuse often still faced collectors who wouldn’t stop, and credit files that still showed discharged debts. They weren’t getting the fresh start they had paid for.
After years of research, Jason struck out on his own. He recognized that the FDCPA and the FCRA could help these consumers directly — so he began suing debt collectors, credit reporting agencies, and the companies that feed bad information to those agencies (known as “furnishers”). The practice eventually came together under the banner of Krumbein Consumer Legal Services, Inc.
What we do today
Today the firm helps consumers throughout Virginia by:
- Suing creditors and debt collectors for violations of the Fair Debt Collection Practices Act;
- Pursuing credit reporting agencies and furnishers for violations of the Fair Credit Reporting Act, including identity theft and mixed credit files;
- Defending consumers against collection lawsuits — Warrants in Debt and Summons & Complaint actions; and
- Advising on bankruptcy where it is truly the best option — though we often prefer to find an alternative.
